Billingham Train Station Improved Access

Billingham Station is an important transport hub for the Tees Valley.  It is located on the Durham Coast line and is served by trains that operate between Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Sunderland and Newcastle (and all stations in between).  The purpose of the project  is to introduce, within the Network Rail controlled infrastructure, an unobstructed “accessible route” from the one station entrance and all drop-off points associated with that entrance, to each platform and between platforms served by passenger trains at Billingham Station.

The Department for Transport (DfT) definition of an accessible route is one that:

• Can be negotiated by the user of a manually self-propelled wheelchair;
• Ideally, does not exceed 400m, from the station entrance (or drop off point if further) to the appropriate point of entry/exit of stationed trains; and
• Satisfies all applicable requirements of ‘DfT Design Standards for Accessible Railway Stations (version 04, 20 March 2015) except where prior dispensations have been agreed.

Currently at Billingham, from the car park / drop off point, access onto platforms 1 and 2 is only available via the stepped footbridge to the island platforms.  The project looks to resolve this by delivering a step free and fully accessible station through the introduction of a new footbridge with lifts between the station entrance and island platforms.  The project will also deliver improved car park facilities and landscaping on the station approach.

Work to install the new footbridge and lifts is now ongoing.
