Hundreds Of Local Firms Turn Out For Successful Net Zero Teesside Event

More than 300 businesses today (24 May) came together to discover the benefits and opportunities in store when Net Zero Teesside Power’s innovative carbon capture, utilisation and storage power plant enters development.

The bp-led project, a multimillion-pound flexible gas-fired power station with CCUS capabilities, is expected to be up and running in the next five years and could create up to 4,000 jobs during its construction.

Major global energy companies such as Technip Energies, GE, Aker Solutions, Doosan Babcock and Siemens Energy were on hand to deliver presentations to attendees across a number of sectors, with Q&As, networking opportunities and an address from Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen also taking place.

The event was hosted at Hardwick Hall in partnership with NOF, which provides comprehensive business development services for companies in the energy sector.

It followed a successful webinar last month, during which more than 700 delegates learned how they could get involved with the scheme, which is aiming to help create the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster by 2040.

Mayor Houchen said: “Net Zero Teesside Power will be an absolute game-changer in terms of leading the way on industrial decarbonisation, putting our region at the forefront of developing ground-breaking green technology and delivering thousands cleaner, safer and healthier jobs in the industries of the future.

“It’s essential our local supply chain businesses know the ins and outs of everything we’re doing at Teesworks and with projects like NZT so they can grab these massive opportunities with both hands. This will help all corners of Teesside, Hartlepool and Darlington benefit from transformational work that we’re carrying out, boosting businesses and, ultimately, putting more money in people’s pockets.

“This is the latest in a long line of engagement events, but it won’t be the last, as we continue to secure ground-breaking UK and world firsts in innovative technologies right here on our doorstep.”

Net Zero Teesside Power – which will provide low-carbon electricity for up to 1.3million homes – is part of the East Coast Cluster, which is the UK Government’s preferred project to lead the UK’s net zero ambitions as part of its Carbon Capture and Usage and Storage cluster sequencing process.

The East Coast Cluster has the potential to capture up to 10million tonnes of COemissions per year from a range of businesses across Teesside, including Net Zero Teesside Power, and store it under the North Sea via a series of pipes.
