Schools have one week to sign up to the eighth annual Tees Valley Skills and STEM Event, the region’s biggest careers fair.

The event will take place at the Olympia Building at Teesside University on Tuesday, July 2, but there is still time for schools to sign up as visitors and take advantage of the opportunity to engage with 75 universities, colleges, learning providers and employers.

Hosted by Tees Valley Combined Authority, in partnership with North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP), Teesside University, Tees Valley Learning Provider Network and Sirius Minerals, it is one of the largest events of its kind in the area.

Since they were launched, the Tees Valley Skills and STEM events have engaged with over 12,000 young people to date, with more than 1,500 young people aged 14-18 from more than 30 Tees Valley learning establishments attending last year.

It comes following the success of the first Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Careers Fair, also at Teesside University, which saw 300 students engage with 40 exhibitors and interactive activities including a Star Dome, allowing them to experience the sky at night. Due to its popularity, plans are under way to make this an annual event.

Cllr Bob Cook, Tees Valley Combined Authority Cabinet Lead on Education, Employment and Skills, said: “These events are central to our initiative to give the next generation of Tees Valley talent the skills they need to succeed and that businesses need to thrive.

“There’s a wealth of opportunity in our region across many exciting sectors and by giving students a clear idea of the huge range of roles on offer, we can inspire them to go further and realise their ambitions here in the Tees Valley. It’s invaluable for businesses too, to help them meet and shape the future of their workforce.”

Gary Crawley, Student Recruitment and Outreach Manager, Teesside University, said: “We’re again delighted to be welcoming the Tees Valley Skills and Stem Event back for its eighth year, and to have hosted the inaugural SEND Careers Fair. Both of these shows give young people the knowledge of paths open to them and help better understand the world of work and raise their aspirations for the future.”

Jo Thompson, of Tees Valley Learning Provider Network, said: “Every year the Skills and STEM Event just gets better and better. I’d urge all of the schools in our area to make sure they are signed up and attend to show their students what vibrant and fulfilling careers are on offer.”
