View to a Thrill as Teesside Airport Reveals New Lookout Platform and Bar

Teesside International Airport | Published on: 4th October 2021

Teesside International Airport has revealed plans for a brand new Sky Bar and viewing platform, to give passengers and enthusiasts a new space for spotting planes.

The new development will replace the old outdoor viewing platform, located at ground level beside the terminal building, and which has remained closed for a number of years.

The Sky Bar and platform will be located across two floors in the landside area of the airport, with a welcome space on the ground floor and bar and platform above, occupying space currently used as offices.

Since visitors will be able to access the platform without having to pass through to departures, like the Landside Café, everyone will be able to take advantage of the modern and contemporary area whether flying or not.

The plans have been drawn up by Darlington-based architects Corstorphine & Wright, who were previously involved in the airport’s multimillion-pound terminal transformation and who have also led on designs for the new-look Steel House Teesworks headquarters, currently under development.

Work is set to begin on the development before the end of the year, with it due to be opened for next year’s summer season.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “The airport’s old viewing platform was much-loved, well-used and there have been frequent calls from people across the region to have it reopened.

“We’ve had a lot of feedback in person and on social media saying that while the existing area is good, it would be even better to have something at height to get the best views and pictures of planes taking off and landing.

“We’ve listened to that reaction and, to bring the viewing platform up to date and in keeping with the airport’s refreshed new look fit for the 21st century, we are incorporating it into our recently transformed terminal building. We’re using the same locally based architects responsible for the previous upgrade, Corstorphine & Wright, to make sure it’s up to standard and in keeping with the rest of the terminal.

“The viewing platform will still be free to use, but with the added benefits of being able to grab a drink, relax in comfort and enjoy watching the ever-increasing number of planes arrive and depart whatever the weather.”

Tom Harrison, Associate Director at Corstorphine & Wright Architects, said: “This is another exciting and different project we’re proud to be working on for Teesside Airport. We know how popular the old viewing platform has been over the years and we’re working hard to get this right, with the perfect elevation so people can enjoy uninterrupted views of the aircraft. We’re confident our plans will get even more people flocking to see the aircraft whether they are travelling or not.”

Those who visit the viewing platform will also receive two hours free parking if they make a purchase in the Landside Café or new Sky Bar.
