Festival Season Spotlight: Five unmissable acts at Middlesbrough’s Twisterella Festival

Twisterella, is Middlesbrough’s award-winning music festival which returns on Saturday 9th October at multiple-venues in the heart of Middlesbrough.
After picking up the ‘In On The Ground Floor’ gong in recognition of its forward-thinking bookings at the Independent Festival Awards in 2019, Twisterella is back with a jam-packed line-up full to the brim with the brightest and best breaking bands.
With such a strong line-up, it’s hard to pick favourites – but here are five unmissable acts set to take to the stage this weekend:
1. Jordan Mackampa
Jordan’s debut album ‘Foreigner’ was one of the best debut albums released in 2020 and earned him comparisons to the likes of Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye! While those grandiose comparisons may seem pretty bold, Jordan’s effortlessly soulful sound and deeply personal lyrics are truly timeless. Have a listen to the exquisite ‘What Am I’ and get excited for his set on Saturday:
2. Lauran Hibberd
Tipped as ‘One To Watch’ by BBC Radio 1, the Isle of Wight native’s off-kilter and playful slacker-pop has wowed crowds across the country including at legendary festivals like Glastonbury and Leeds & Reading. If Weezer meets Phoebe Bridgers sounds are up your street, then prepare to meet your new favourite artist:
3. Campbell Sibthorpe
One of the best things about Twisterella is the array of venues on offer. As well as the main stages, the festival features a pop-up trail in some of Boro’s coolest bars. This year’s pop-up trail headliner is singer-songwriter Campbell Sibthorpe, who local audiences may recognise from his performances with Teesside heroes Cattle & Cane. He recently appeared at Alex James from Blur’s Big Feastival and he’ll be swapping a big house in the country for an independent coffee shop in Middlesbrough as he heads for Off The Ground on Saturday:

4. Blanketman
Described as “soaring punk-tinged indie from Manchester” by the NME, Blanketman are following in the footsteps of their illustrious Mancunian guitar heroes but with their own spin. While they may tip their hats to the likes of Joy Division, The Fall and The Smiths, there’s an edge to Blanketman’s sound that has seen them build a relentless buzz across the UK’s grassroots music scene. Be excited.
5. Jodie Nicholson
At the last Twisterella Festival, Jodie Nicholson was in the audience after attending the festival’s (Un)Conference – Conference – Twisterella – ‘as a lil ball of nerves’. Since then, she’s been playlisted on BBC Radio 6 Music, as well as picking up airplay across BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2. She’s signed a management deal, started working with a booking agent and released critically acclaimed music produced by London Grammar and Aurora’s producer! After amazing sets at the likes of All Points East, Wilderness and Liverpool Sound City, Jodie is the epitome of ‘must-see’ at this year’s Twisterella
