Locomotive train at Head of Steam Museum

Head of Steam

Head of Steam Museum is located on the 1825 route of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, the world’s first steam-worked public railway. The site encompasses three significant Stockton & Darlington Railway buildings of the 1830s/50s: North Road Passenger Station, the Goods Shed and Hopetown Carriage Works.

Step back in time to Victorian Darlington. Venture into this original 1840s railway station and explore the platform, which still has its original footbridge, booking, waiting room, newspaper kiosk and Victorian toilets.

Journey through time and admire four historic locomotives. With a children’s activity room, a shop with souvenirs to suit all tastes and pockets, and a changing programme of exhibitions and events – there’s something for everyone!
