Wynyard Woodland Park

Originally a working railway the park extends over three miles from the edge of Thorpe Thewles to Tilery Wood near Wynyard.

There’s over ten miles of paths to explore within the park. The main cycleway follows the route of the former Castle Eden branch railway, completed in 1880. Today it forms part of National Cycle Network Route 1, providing a wonderful cycling and walking route through the heart of the park, continuing south to Stockton and north into Country Durham.

There’s lots of railway history to discover, not least the former Thorpe Thewles station, platform and coal drops.  Other highlights include Brierley and Tilery Woods at the northern end of the park and Thorpe Wood, an ancient woodland of oak, ash and wych elm.  Also don’t miss Stoney Field with its unique ‘Celestial Kitchen’ sculpture and Pickards Meadow which is seen at its spectacular best in late spring and early summer.

The big adventure playground offers fun and excitement for children of all ages and Station House Tea Room offers a wonderful setting to relax and refuel.

Wynyard Woodland Park is also home to arts collective Missing Piece www.missingpiecearts.com and Wynyard Planetarium & Observatory: www.wynyard-planetarium.net.
